Monumental 2016, my first sub-3.

In 2006, as a college junior, I decided to “get in shape.” I set my sights on a race and used the infamous “couch to 5k” program. Just 15 months after I started running, I ran my first marathon and qualified for Boston.

Since then, I have completed 14 marathons, achieving a Boston qualifying time at each and breaking 3 hours three times.

After an injury in 2010, I’ve come back to set new PRs at all distances since 2014. I hold personal bests of 2:57:03 (marathon), 1:25:53 (half-marathon), 39:13 (10k) and 18:36 (5k). Click here for my running resume (January 2019).

I am a certified Pilates instructor who is passionate about the Pilates method and tailoring it to specific groups including endurance athletes. For three years, I’ve taught multiple classes per week at Baptist Health/Milestone Wellness Center. I am also a certified barre instructor.

I previously authored a monthly column called “Running through the Bluegrass” for The Running Journal (also archived on this site) and maintain a running blog to document my adventures. I am a past contributor to Salty Running and am an avid user of social media, including InstagramTwitter, Facebook, Strava and Athlinks.

An active member of the running community, I enjoy volunteering at races and working with new runners. I volunteered with an AAU cross-country team for several years, including chaperoning a summer camp in the Great Smoky Mountains.

I worked for five years in running specialty retail and led the store’s miniMarathon training group. I previously coordinated the New Balance Louisville racing team and provided marketing consulting to the store.

I am a Hammer Nutrition sponsored athlete for 2018, my third year working with the company. I am an experienced brand ambassador and am eager to share my own running experiences and celebrate the experiences of others.

Outside of running, I am an account executive for Estes Public Relations. I previously worked in public relations/development for a public school district, and as a reporter and freelance writer from 2002-2011, writing for numerous publications in Kentucky.

I am a graduate of the University of Louisville, where I was president of Lambda Pi Eta, the communications honor society, and earned certifications in public relations practice, public relations writing, public relations editing and integrated communications.

My husband is an avid marathoner and triathlete with three Ironman finishes, and we have an Australian Shepherd named Morgan.

  1. Hi! This is Malia, commerce editor at SELF mag. I saw you were recently quoted in our round-up about running sunglasses. I’m working on updating a similar round-up about socks that marathoners and pro runners love. Would you have a pair you recommend, and if so, could you tell me which one and why? (As well as your name and social handle—I can pull these from the sunglasses article, if that works) Thank you! malia_griggs@condenast.com
